Massive download spike of PyS60

Filed under: mobile, python, web — May 1, 2006

Anyone know what might have caused a massive spike in downloads of PyS60 for 1st Edition devices on April 25th and 26th? We normally see around 100 downloads per day, but those two days saw 35,000 downloads total! The SourceForge statistics don’t go deep enough for me to see whether this was the by-product of some lam3 script or legitimate downloads. (BTW, there’s a thread about this on the discussion boards.) I suppose there could have been some event that triggered massive downloads, but somehow I think this is a fluke. Thanks for any insight! –Erik

    Perhaps this one ! ;-)

    GREAT NEWS !

I read in Tommi S60 blog that the Binary client is available for download

    http://research.nokia.com/research/projects/mobile-web-server/raccoon.zip

    Read more at http://research.nokia.com/research/projects/mobile-web-server/phone-software

The client binary is available for download and you can ask us to create an account for you on our gateway. Once you have installed the software and we have created the account, you will have a web server on your mobile phone that can be accessed using any regular web browser.
    Apache Modules

    The following Apache modules have been built in: mod_alias, mod_auth, mod_autoindex, mod_dav, mod_dav_fs, mod_dir, mod_log_config, mod_mime, mod_rewrite, mod_setenvif and last, but definitely not least, mod_python.

Mod_python integrates Python for S60 with Apache and thus you can create content using Python scripting and also Python Server Pages. As it is possible to write your own Python extension modules, the entire S60 API is in principle available, even though the source for the Symbian port of Apache httpd is not yet provided.

Hmm… strong contender, but I thought the Apache port was released on the 28th, not the 25th. I’ll have to check on that. Still, the 35,000 downloads were for the 1st Edition installer, which isn’t compatible with the Apache port. If all those downloads were for Apache/mod_python on S60 you’d think they would have come back to get the 2nd Edition installer.

Still no answer from SourceForge support, BTW.

    Good catch though!

    hello Erik,

Today i look at the sourceforge site and I notice that download figure are now about 18000 download !!! Thus correct figures must be these … We have lost more than 30000 :(

Have you got now an explanation ?

Howdy! You know, I never heard back on my support request about the spike in downloads, although I just took a look at the project page and it’s certainly acting strange. I’m getting server errors from SourceForge, and on the two times that the Files listing did load, I saw two completely different numbers (one had total downloads in the 50k+ range, the other had the 18k+ number you saw.) At this point I’m not sure what’s going on with the SF reporting, unfortunately.
